SIGHTS

  • Torre de Belem

    The Manueline building dates from the 16th century and was created as a ceremonial entrance and for the defense of the Tagus and the Mosteiro dos Jeronimos.

  • Praça do Comércio

    Also known as the Terreiro do Pac, referring to the Ribeira Palace, in 1755 it was totally destroyed by an earthquake. Centrally you see the statue of the former king Joseph I.

  • Sintra

    West of Lisbon (25 km) is the small town of Sintra, known for his many monumental buildings and surrounded by beautiful nature.

  • Padrao dos Descobrimentos

    The monument was built in honor of the many Portuguese explorers of the 15th and 16th centuries. As leader Henry the Seafarer followed by 32 other leading figures from Portuguese history.

  • Oceanario

    Located in the Parque das Nações and built by the American architect Peter Chermayeff at the occasion of the World Exhibition in 1998. The aquarium has a wonderful collection of large fish, including the rare angelfish.

  • National Pantheon

    The 17th century Santa Engracia church was only finished in the 20th century and transformed into the Panteao Nacional. Here you will find the graves of many Portuguese celebrities.

  • Igreja Do Carmo

    The Gothic Carmelite church and adjacent monastery were destroyed by an earthquake in 1755. The monastery was later partly renovated but ruins of the church are still there to admire.

  • Jeronimos Jeróimos

    The monastery built of limestone is located in the Santa Maria de Bele district. Known for its many decorations that refer to the founder of this building, King Manuel I. Today it's one of the main attractions of the city.

  • Sao Jorge Castle

    Located on the highest hill of the city, this castle dates from the 6th century BC. Throughout the centuries the castle was inhabited by various peoples like the Romans, Celts and Muslims.
