SIGHTS

  • Winter Palace

The palace is a beautiful blend of baroque and neoclassical architecture, built in the 18th century as a winter residence of the tsars. After an end to the Tsarist Russia in 1917 it became a museum where today you still can admire many artworks of the tsars.

  • Smolny Convent

The convent is located along the banks of the Neva River. Originally it served as a Russian Orthodox monastery. The Smolny Cathedral and the adjoining buildings belong to one of the most popular sights of the city.

  • Saint Isaac's Cathedral

The first cathedral dates back to early 18th century but was destroyed after 40 years by several landslides. It was not until the early 19th century before they could start with the construction of the new cathedral.

  • Peterhof Palace

The palace complex, nicknamed "The Russian Versailles" was built by Peter the Great and is located in the southwest of the city. The former summer palace of Russian tsars until the Russian Revolution was embellished and expanded into a unique attraction.

  • Church of the Savior on spilled blood

The church was built on the site where Tsar Alexander II was assassinated in 1881, and has a rich history. During the Russian Revolution it was completely plundered and it was even used as a warehouse during the Second World War. After an extensive renovation of nearly 30 years the church reopened its doors.
